Hi. MMI code is simply a code  dialed containing the *and the hash# characters. Invalid connection either means no network access or the MMI code it wrong. Call barring (which normally applies to international calls) is otherwise handled at your service provider's end. I suggest you obtain a working SIM card of the same carrier or service provider name and phone their customer service center for assistance with this.
